Donostia / San Sebastián

San Sebastián is the administrative capital city of Guipuzcoa, one of the three provinces which make up the Basque Autonomous Community. It is on the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula, 30 kilometres from the border with France. The cross-border region which goes from San Sebastián to Bayonne is an important hub for social, economic and tourist development in the south-west of the European Union (EU).

San Sebastián is a medium-sized city (187,000 inhabitants) with an economy focused on the tertiary sector, mainly tourism and commerce, and a strong emphasis on services and congresses. Its commitment to science, technology, sustainable development and culture resulted in its taking a leading position amongst European cities and its being designated European Capital of Culture 2016.

The most recognizable lookout point presents the beaches of Ondarreta and La Concha, with San Clara Island nestling in the centre of the bay. The third beach of the city, La Zurriola, lying alongside and beyond the Kursaal Congress Centre, is famous for its excellent surfing spots.
